Freer/Sackler: Iran in Photograph

Iran in Photographs
The art of photography was introduced to Iran more than 150 years ago. Browse this site to view hundreds of photographs taken in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, from distinguished images of the Qajar royal family and expansive views of Persepolis to glimpses of everyday in life on the streets of Tehran. Explore the use of glass-plate negatives in early photography, research archival records, learn about collectors, and take an intimate look at life in Iran a century ago.

The Archives of the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery contain more than 1,100 original prints and glass-plate negatives by Antonin Sevruguin and other photographers. A grant from the Parsa Foundation funded the digitization and cataloging of the entire Freer and Sackler collection, the largest public collection of Sevruguin’s photographs outside of Iran. These prints and plates, assembled from the donated holdings of avid collectors and historians, form the core of a rapidly growing collection of early photography of Iran and establish the Freer and Sackler Archives as a leading center for its study.

If you have individual images or albums of photographs taken in Iran and other Near Eastern countries before 1950, please consider donating them to the Freer and Sackler Archives. Contact 202.633.0533 or AVRreference@si.edu for more information.

Tehran Branch of the Insitute of Islamic Studies, McGill University

"Academic cooperation between McGill University and the University of Tehran can be traced back to 1964, when Dr. Mehdi Mohaghegh, following a two year teaching position (1961-1962) at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), was delegated by the University of Tehran to McGill’s Institute of Islamic Studies to teach Persian Language and Literature. During his time at the Institute (one of the first institutes of its kind in North America), Dr. Mohaghegh undertook the teaching of Shi`i Philosophy, Discourse, Mysticism, and Jurisprudence, fields not extensively studied in the west previously. It was during his time at McGill that Dr. Mohaghegh began to collaborate with Dr. Toshihiko Izutsu, a professor at the Institute, with whom he jointly published a number of texts in a series called “Wisdom of Persia” (Silsilah-i dānish-i Īrānī)."

The site currently includes ten of the Tehran Branch publications with many more to be added. The publications are predominantly on Iranian philosophy, history of science and literature.

The Tehran Branch website is here.

Farsi Arabi

The manuscripts existing in numerous and various collections are considered to be the God-given mercy from which all the scientific and cultural developments have originated. So far considering this heritage, regardless of its scientific values, resembles the appreciation of human endeavor in expressing their views and surrounding world.
All the Islamic manuscripts that are now available at totfim website for all scholars and interested groups of people stem from bunch of researches. The definition and recognition of cultural impact particularly the Iranian one on various cultural Arenas, for which the amendment of "Iranian world" can be chosen, have been a cause for concern both for me and some of our colleagues that contribute their own time to this protect for years. Expressing and receiving an appropriate answer to this question, led to comprehensive and wise heated debate; and traveling extensively created this cultural government considering the soufists living in Khorasan in Chinese Kashghar borders, and making pilgrimage on some of scholars' shrines in Sa’dah of Yemen have all been the achievements of our sacred journey in which Iranian attitude and culture was prevalent. The eternal and stable culture that was conspicuous with all its indigenous characteristics and sometimes influenced the courtesy, religion, morals of the others. The compiling of different parts of Iranian and Islamic ancient heritage, such as manuscripts, tablets, documents and also images is the conspicuous effort that has led to the denudation of this site and its achievement in classified and modern structure will be at service of those seeking this accomplishment.

Ernst Herzfeld Papers

Announced today at the Smithsonian Collection Blog: New Freer|Sackler Archives Image Galleries

Ernst Herzfeld Papers
A foremost scholar in the field of Iranian studies, Ernst Herzfeld (1879–1948) explored all phases of Near Eastern culture from the prehistoric period to Islamic times. The collection documents Herzfeld's archaeological activities including Samarra, Persepolis, Pasargadae, Paikuli, and Aleppo and includes correspondence; field notebooks; drawings; sketchbooks; inventories of objects; squeezes of architectural inscriptions and details; and photographs.

Preservation, digitization, and cataloging has been made possible by the Leon Levy Foundation. The cataloging of this collection commenced in September 2009, and will be ongoing until Summer 2011. Please be advised that some of the Series and categories are not hot linked to images yet as we are in the process of making them available.

Cataloging and descriptions for the Ernst Herzfeld papers were created based on primary materials within the Ernst Herzfeld papers, notes and organization from Joseph Upton, and from secondary sources listed in the Ernst Herzfeld Resource Bibliography.

It is our hope that by providing the Ernst Herzfeld papers online we are contributing to the scholarship of, and interest in, the archaeological sites of the ancient Near East. We welcome additional insight and scholarship you may be able to add. If you hold, or know where related materials may be, please contact us so that we can maintain an up to date record of all Ernst Herzfeld resources. In the future, the Freer|Sackler hopes to expand upon this web resource to include all Ernst Herzfeld materials.

Permission to reproduce and publish an item from the Archives is coordinated through the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery's Rights and Reproductions department. For inquiries on selecting images or appointments to research the collection, please contact the Archives.

Go read our latest news on the collection available on our blog and view our video tutorial on how to search the Archives. Click here to view a list of the locations for which we have Herzfeld materials.
