Bibliografía española sobre el Norte de África

"The work of the late Spanish Arabist, Rodolfo Gil Grimau, entitled “Bibliografía española sobre el Norte de África” has been recently published in Internet thanks to the sponsor of the Andalucian Government [Junta de Andalucía, Consejería de Obras Públicas y Vivienda] and in the way of a database. The link can be reached via http://www.juntadeandalucia.es/obraspublicasyvivienda/obraspublicasyvivienda/bibliografianorteafrica/01_00.jsp.

This work represents the largest bibliographic record ever compiled on North Africa and Al-Andalus, giving the publication a particular emphasis on the public works and the architecture developed by Spanish professionals in the neighbouring countries over the course of the 20th century.
The interface has been made in Spanish, French, English and Arabic. "

Fyke Collection of Afghan War Rugs

Fyke Collection of Afghan War Rugs

"The peoples of Afghanistan have a rich and distinguished textile history. The Baluch and the Turkman, the Tajik and the Hazara, are among the tribal groups that produce embroideries, felts and knotted pile woven textiles that reflect their identities, beliefs, and ways of life. The Baluch, for example, were nomadic herders whose belongings needed to be portable. They are known in the West as the producers of deeply coloured pile carpets of unprecedented lushness. Made entirely by hand, pile carpets were prized possessions that served as bedding or seating and could be easily rolled up for transport.

With the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 a new genre of rug emerged. Baluch weavers in the vicinity of Herat, the site of intense resistance to the Soviet-backed regime, began incorporating new motifs into their carpets. Geometric medallions were replaced with guns, tanks, helicopters and jets, inspired by the Soviet armaments that undoubtedly confronted them in the streets..."

PAPERWEIGHT - ART IN GLASS

The last time I visited New York, I bought myself 2 paperweights at J.Crew a lobster and a map of the city.
Paperweights evolved from functional to the beautiful during the early part of the industrial revolution. As the economic engines of commerce began to generate bills, letters and other business paper something had to be provided to hold them down during the breezes that were common when offices had windows . Early paperweights were simple functional items of metal or glass. By the 1840s, a whole industry emerged in France that would transform the simple paperweight into a glorious work of art on every desktop Decorative glass paperweights fit easily into the hand and are actually meant to be handled and viewed from various directions through the dome, which acts like a lens to make design change in its appearance with its movements. Find your on work of art at John Derian Company Inc.

New Open Access Journal: Middle East Media Educator

Middle East Media Educator
Published by: University of Wollongong in Dubai
Frequency: Annual
August 2011 Volume I, No. 1
ISSN 2224-2813
"Middle East Media Educator (MEME) is a refereed journal published annually at the University of Wollongong in Dubai. It was inspired by and takes as its model Asia Pacific Media Educator (APME) which has been published at the University of Wollongong in Australia since 1996, founded and still edited by Eric Loo. Like APME, MEME "aims to bridge the gap between media educators and practitioners."

MEME is the first such journal in the Middle East, and it will strive to encourage dialogue between industry and academe in a region where informed analysis of the media isn't widespread. Educators struggle to find textbooks and case studies that are relevant to the unique situation in the Middle East region because most teaching resources are developed in other parts of the world.

Research articles and commentaries about the state of the media, media professions, media education, and other topics relevant to the region are welcome. Until study of the media, media professions, and media contexts in the Middle East becomes far more widespread, MEME will tend to be eclectic in its editorial policy. We welcome articles for Issue 2 in August 2012 and will consider abstracts and article proposals for that issue by the end of December 2011."
